We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions we get about cistern care, water health & safety, and water treatment solutions.
Whether you’re on a rural property, managing a commercial site, or a remote community system, these FAQs are here to help you understand how to keep your water clean, safe, and reliable.
Watch for signs like foul odors, cloudy or discoloured water, low pressure, sediment, or visible slime or buildup inside the tank — all of which can signal bacterial growth or contamination. Alberta Health also recommends taking action if you experience unusual health issues that could be linked to your water, such as gastrointestinal illness. Any noticeable change in your water’s appearance, taste, or smell should be treated seriously and followed up with an inspection and disinfection.
At minimum, Alberta Health recommends cleaning and chlorinating your cistern once a year to prevent sludge and bacterial buildup. They also advise testing your water twice a year for bacteria. Regular maintenance keeps your water safe and your system running properly.
Hauled water can be safe when it comes from a licensed source and is stored in a clean, properly maintained cistern. However, contamination can still occur — whether from dirty hoses during delivery, sludge buildup, or poorly maintained tanks. Underground cisterns are especially susceptible to cracks, leaks, and contamination due to shifting ground or improper installation.
We work alongside potable water hauling companies that follow the highest sanitation standards to ensure safety. That said, regular cistern inspections, disinfection, and UV or filtration treatment are still recommended to keep your water potable, safe, and compliant.
A cistern is a storage system that holds potable or hauled water, often buried underground or placed above ground. A water treatment system is installed in your home or building to remove contaminants before the water reaches your taps. We offer both — and they work best when maintained together.
A properly designed water treatment system can remove a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological contaminants. This includes:
Timelines vary depending on the scope of work. From the initial consultation to project completion, the process typically begins with an assessment and estimate. Once scheduled, on-site work can range from 2 hours to several days, depending on the service — whether it’s a basic cistern cleaning, a full system installation, or addressing water quality issues. We’ll always provide a clear timeline during the quoting stage so you know what to expect.
